2013 turned out to be a great start for the new Board of Directors. We spent the winter getting organized and in the first half of the year had several good fundraisers that paid our expenses for the season. Our two biggest events for the community were the annual Duck Race and the hopefully annual "Growing Green Garden Tour," where we showcased 11 sites throughout the town that promoted sustainable and organic gardening practices. Thank you to all the site owners/gardeners who participated! We rented out nearly every bed at the garden, and harvests were plentiful. We'd like to thank Treasurer Michele Small and her husband Roy for putting in a lot of time and effort weekly to keep the site mowed, which is not an easy task. We did have a couple additional changes in the board: we said goodbye to Secretary Jeanette Gagne early in the season and Vice-President Dawn Evans at the end of the season when she moved back to Arizona. But we also welcomed Michelle Mears on as our new Secretary and RGS teacher Becky Wright as a Director. Welcome aboard and thank you for helping the RGLSC to continue on and grow. We'd like to also express thanks to many Friends of the RGLSC who helped us this year: Wentworth Greenhouses and Jack Carroll, Librarian Tamara Niedzolkowski, Roy Small, Judy Nelson, John Wastrom, all the volunteers who manned our Garden Tour sites, all our gardeners, and everyone in the community who came out to support us at our events. We'll see you in 2014!

On June 22, join us for the RGLSC's "Growing Green...Not Your Average Garden Tour," featuring sustainable and organic local gardens and farms in Rollinsford, NH. More information and site previews are available at: http://growinggreengardentour.weebly.com
The Rollinsford Garden and Local Sustainability Club (aka the Garden Club) is in its second year of working on the revival of the Cross Street Garden, the charming urban space at the top of Cross Street that was turned into a garden walkway several years back by Mr. Poirier. We are looking for a volunteer mason with tools who can help us repair some of the damaged steps and bricks in the walkway.
If you have any experience with this kind of work, we'd love to have you give us a hand. Please contact us at [email protected]. We will supply materials as needed. Thank you! Recently, Rollinsford Community Garden board members had the luck to meet Mr. Roger Perreault (formerly of Foundry St, now of Silver St.) who lived next door as a child to the property that the Garden now sits on. While the property is now mostly brush and youngish trees, it was at that time an open field. He offered to show us some photos from the 1940s, and we gladly accepted! Thank you to Mr. Perrault for giving us permission to use these photos!
Recently we set up a free coffee table at the Rollinsford Transfer Station to help raise funds for the coming season. We talked to interested people and handed out informational membership forms. It was cold and started to snow, but we made a lot of contacts and generated a nice small sum to help us get going for the season.
Thank you Rollinsford citizens and the town of Rollinsford for supporting this wonderful community resource! Duck Race and Egg Hunt: The Duck Race held in 2011 and 2012 was a lot of fun. Crowds gathered as 100 rubber duckies were dropped from the top of the falls and raced for the finish line in the river. And after that, the $100 prize went to the first place winner! Then participants went on to the community garden where the children ran and played, scooping up eggs filled with candy and other fun surprises. It was a wonderful time for all who attended! Hay Down Hoe Down: Hay Down Hoe Down has been held during the summer at the community garden. The food is all organic, healthy, and delicious! The bands are great, and we host some of the very best vendors around. The garden is at its most beautiful, and people stroll throughout with their fresh corn on the cob while the children laugh and play, the live music is on stage, and people hula-hoop in the green grass. It’s an event enjoyed by all! Haunted Gardens: A frighteningly fun night at the community garden held in late October, brave folks from the community come through the gardens . . . screaming all the way! Misc. Events: As a group, the RGLSC has supported other community events like this one: the scarecrow contest at the Rollinsford Public Library. |
