Thank you to everyone who helped by selling and buying ducks for our annual fundraiser. The rain held off, and this year we broke all records! The RGLSC would like to say thank you to a dozen 5th and 6th graders from Ms. Arnault's class at RGS for coming to the Cross Street Garden on Earth Day to rake and rake and rake more leaves! Thank you to Suzanne Huard and Judith Nelson for talking to the class beforehand about the project and for helping Ms. Arnault and co. with kid-wrangling. Also, thank you to Mike from the town for coming to pick up several truckloads of leaves and debris and taking them to the transfer station for us! Up next: mulching! The water was running and the ducks were flying. The duck dumpers were getting wet in the falls, the duck wranglers were working hard with their nets, and the rain threatened but didn't rain. It was a perfect day with lots of cheering for the little yellow ducks A special thanks to our duck dumpers, wranglers, sellers, and counters!
Congratulations to : 1st Place Robin Kovalcin $100 2nd Place Taryn Gross $50 3rd Place Phil & Leslie Perkins $25 And of course thank you for supporting local economy, local food production, local sustainability, and most important, a sense of community!!! The mighty Salmon Falls River is a little too mighty right now and our ducks are quacking up a storm, asking that we wait for the river to calm down a bit before we send them on their journey to the finish line. The duck race date/time has been changed to Saturday, May 3, 2:00 pm. (That’s when the ducks start their race; feel free to gather earlier so you don’t miss the duck drop).
But this isn't necessarily a bad thing; you now have 2 MORE WEEKS to buy tickets online here! First place wins $100 cash. NEW: 2nd and 3rd place win $50 and $25 cash respectively! You do not need to be present to win but please come join the fun! There will be little treats for the kiddies! :) We had a great meeting Wednesday with both new and old gardeners. We went over the usual garden "Do's and Don't's" as well as talked about all the new changes coming up with the Timberland Earth Day service project that's helping us to reclaim the 14-acre Foundry St. site for public recreational use (more info to come in the near future.) We still have some beds left, plus Timberland will be building us 10 new beds in May, so if you missed the meeting or are just finding out about the community garden now, feel free to contact Michele Small via our Contact Us page to reserve your beds for the upcoming gardening season. Reminder: you don't have to be a Rollinsford resident to garden in our town. Everyone is welcome!!! Hello, everyone, our April public meeting at the Rollinsford Public Library (in the lower mill) will be at 6:30pm on Wednesday 4/16 and not 4/2. This will also be our New Gardener's Orientation Meeting. At this meeting, new (and old, if you wish) gardeners with the RGLSC will pay for their 2014 bed rentals via check and get their bed number(s,) learn about how the community garden works, go over our list of garden rules, and sign a standard waiver required by the town, which owns the land the community garden is on.
We would like everyone new who knows they will be renting beds for 2014 to come to the meeting, but if you are unable to make it, please contact Michele Small ([email protected]) to get your copy of the garden rules, sign your waiver, and give her your rental check. Thank you, and we hope to see lots of new faces for the coming year, especially since we're adding 10 new beds! The Rollinsford Garden and Local Sustainability Club a.k.a the “garden club” is pleased to announce that Timberland has accepted our application to become a Timberland Earth Day service project. On Thursday, May 15th, 2014, 75 Timberland volunteers will be arriving in town for the day to work on the following projects at the 14-acre Foundry Street site:
· Archway Project: Design and construct archway as entrance to community garden using materials found in nature (i.e. limbs, twigs, vines, etc.) · Brush Clearing (Garden) Project: Clear brush to open up the community garden space (front entrance, garden beds and stage) · Brush Clearing (Trail) Project Clear brush/bittersweet in order to reclaim 60 year-old apple trees · Community Garden Enhancements Project: Assemble picnic tables/benches to enhance outdoor stage area and build/ready 10 new raised beds for community garden area (fill with loam) · Nature Trail: Blaze nature trail through woods up to the hilltop eagle habitat. Build small bridge over wet area and clear out debris at the site (old tires, etc.) Timberland has been partnering with local community groups for over 20 years and brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to this effort. Timberland not only provides the volunteers but also the tools, materials/supplies and organization to make this a success. The RGLSC will provide lunch to the volunteers, and we are currently working on finding sponsors to help support this. We are also planning to host an open house for town residents at the end of the day to help us celebrate the day of service and also kick off the community’s new trails and garden expansion. This is a beautiful piece of property that we want our residents to enjoy for many years to come. Please stay tuned as we work out the details. The RGLSC thanks Timberland for this wonderful opportunity. We also thank our growing list of supporters and sponsors: Town of Rollinsford: $200 Rollinsford PTO: $200 American Legion: use of parking lot and bathroom facilities (Timberland will also supply porta-potties) If you would like to contribute to our efforts, we will be at the PTO penny sale on March 30 at the American Legion (12-4pm) conducting a membership drive. The RGLSC will be selling tickets soon for 2014's Annual Duck Race. This is always a popular event for the community and a great fundraiser for the Garden Club. The winner (whoever "bought" the first plastic duck to cross the finish line) will receive $100. Watch out for more news soon! |
